More research needs to be done before we can determine for sure whether or not 3D imagery is harmful for young eyes, but nevertheless, Nintendo recommends that children aged 6 and under should play the Nintendo 3DS with its 3D capabilities turned off.

The 3D effect on the Nintendo 3DS can be adjusted or turned off entirely with the slider located on the top right-hand side of the handheld, but 3D effects can also be locked down using parental controls. Follow these instructions.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 Minutes

Here's How:

  1. Turn on your Nintendo 3DS.
  2. On the bottom screen, tap the "System Settings" menu (the wrench icon).
  3. Tap the "Parental Controls" menu.
  4. If this is your first time setting up Parental Controls, you'll be asked to choose a four-digit pin number that you will need to enter any time you want to change parental settings on that Nintendo 3DS unit. You'll also be asked to provide an answer for a pre-selected list of personal questions, in case you lose your PIN. Don't forget the PIN or the answer to your personal question!
  5. When you're done setting your PIN, tap "Set Restrictions."
  6. Scroll down the menu on the bottom screen and tap the fourth option: "Display of 3D Images."
  7. Choose "Restrict" or "Do Not Restrict."
  8. Tap "OK."
  9. You'll be taken back to the master list of parental restrictions. "Display of 3D Images" should now have a pink lock icon beside it, indicating that the Nintendo 3DS cannot display any 3D images.
  10. Once you exit the menu, the Nintendo 3DS will reset. Test the 3D slider on the right-hand side of the top screen: The 3D display should be non-functional. To launch programs or games in 3D, the user must input the same PIN that is used to access the Nintendo 3DS's Parental Controls. Otherwise, the games and programs will launch in 2D.

  1. If you want the Nintendo 3DS to display 3D images again, simply enter the Parental Controls menu under System Settings. After entering your 4-digit PIN, select "Display of 3D Images" once again and tap "Do Not Restrict." Tap "OK."
