Definition: Nintendo is a video game company, and one of the best-known designers and developers of video games and game consoles. Founded in Japan in 1889, Nintendo used to make hanafuda cards (Japanese playing cards), and got involved with other small ventures before settling on video games in the mid-1970s. Nintendo is recognized for revolutionizing (and revitalizing) the video game industry with titles like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda. The Nintendo Entertainment System, which came to America in 1985, is widely credited for reviving Americans' interest in home video game consoles after an over-saturation of poor titles caused the industry to crash in 1983.

Nintendo designed and distributed (or distributes) the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Game Boy and its variants, the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64, the Gamecube, the Game Boy Advance, the Wii, the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DS Lite and the Nintendo DSi.
