Planet Puzzle League Review

About.com Rating four out of Five

From About.com

The Bottom Line

A fun, addictive title in the tradition of Tetris, Planet Puzzle League is easy to pick up but hard to master. It offers the fast-paced energy of a truly exciting puzzle game, while keeping things interesting with plenty of play modes and a dose of online competition.

Pros

  • Array of modes offers lots of different ways to play
  • Online compatibility means an endless stream of foes
  • Feels approachable but unique among puzzle games

Cons

  • Some play modes are less fun than others
  • Doesn’t reinvent the wheel

Description

  • Gameplay is simple: unlike Tetris, blocks scroll up from the floor instead of falling from the sky.
  • Run stylus over two adjacent blocks to make them switch places. Match three blocks of the same color and they’ll disappear.
  • Keep the screen as clear as possible. Make matching combos for more points.
  • Hold the DS itself sideways to play, like you’d hold a book.

Guide Review - Planet Puzzle League Review

Like other puzzle games before it, Planet Puzzle League offers simple gameplay so fun it can easily turn addictive. Don’t be surprised if, after a few hours of playing, you close your eyes at night and see blocks and combos. With tons of gameplay modes—including timed games and preset puzzles—there’s plenty to keep this match-three mechanic interesting. Brightly colored graphics and cheerful electronic music lighten the mood of online play, which allows you to go online and challenge Planet Puzzle League players around the world. Be warned though: with enough training, some people get really good. To hone your own skills, try the daily play mode, which charts your day-by-day progress a la Brain Age. While it doesn’t offer any earth-shatteringly new content, Planet Puzzle League succeeds in showing players a good time—if you can sleep at night without seeing blocks.
