Ninjatown for the Nintendo DS

The Bottom Line

Inside this adorable exterior hides an enjoyable tower defense strategy game that even the most bitter ninja-hater could love. Thought its far from innovative in its gameplay, Ninjatown is fun, easy to pick up, but still challenging to master.

Pros

  • Super cute graphics give the game a light-hearted, original feel.
  • Amusing dialogue helps build the humorous ninja universe.
  • Learning curve is gentle enough that non strategy buffs can get into the groove.
  • Learning curve is gentle enough that non strategy buffs can get into the groove.

Cons

  • Doesn’t innovate when it comes to gameplay or mechanics.
  • Might turn off hardcore players with its emphasis on cuteness.

Description

  • Fend off monsters before they can reach the opposite side of the terrain.
  • To summon fighters, build and upgrade ninja huts along the monsters’ trails.
  • Keep an eye on the top screen to see which enemies are approaching.
  • Challenge a friend to fight faster in multiplayer mode.

Guide Review - Ninjatown Review

Ninjatown may be based off a line of plush ninjas called Shawnimals, but luckily the game feels like a whole lot more than a slapdash tie-in. Your adorable town is in trouble, and the only way to save it is with classic tower defense: don’t let approaching enemies make it across your screen. By building and upgrading ninja huts, along with using special weapons, players stop the waves of Tamagotchi-like monsters and the cast of adorable and entertaining Ninjatown inhabitants. For those not turned off by the game’s emphasis on cuteness, Ninjatown can be a lot of fun – even if you don’t traditionally play strategy games. The learning curve is gentle on newbies, and doesn’t throw too much new info or too many new challenges at players. All in all, Ninjatown is an excellent introduction to the genre – or just to the adorable lives of ninjas.
