Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Review

About.com Rating two out of Five

From About.com

The Bottom Line

Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Prielli isn’t a bad DS racing game per se, it’s just a boring one. With unimpressive cars, tracks, and gameplay, it lacks the thrill of a realistic racer, and the kitschy fun of an unrealistic one. If it has one success, it’s in finding a way to make driving really expensive cars surprisingly dull.

Pros

  • Using only one cartridge, you can play Ferrari Challenge with up to four friends.
  • Tutorial mode, with its instant feedback, feels surprisingly rewarding.
  • The game has acceptable graphics and sound.

Cons

  • Ferrari Challenge gives players little sense of speed.
  • Different tracks rarely feel unique or smartly challenging.
  • Cards awarded for winning races are only useful in arbitrary games of “War.”
  • Maps are small and give players little sense what’s coming up on the road.

Description

  • Race Ferraris around a series of tracks, earning special cards for winning races.
  • Avoid walls and other cars, but don't worry too much, since your vehicle can’t take damage.
  • Keep an eye on your speed and gears (shown on the bottom screen) while watching the road (on the top screen).

Guide Review - Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Review

Though System 3’s Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pireli does have some good points – a decent soundtrack and the ability to play with up to five people using only one cartridge – in the overall it’s a dull racing game in a genre that’s supposed to be, if anything, exciting. It lacks a sense of speed, a sense of realism, and a sense of fun. Though the tutorial mode, which gives you instant feedback on how well you’re driving, feels entertaining, that mechanic falls away when the real racing begin. In its place we’re left racing on mediocre tracks, wish we were playing a different game entirely.
