Kirby Super Star Ultra Review

About.com Rating threehalf out of Five

From About.com

The Bottom Line

An enhanced remake of Kirby Super Star for the Super NES, Super Star Ultra brings back the lovely pink puff and his classic fun adventures – but doesn’t add much new and exciting to the mix.

Pros

  • Kirby Super Star Ultra has the same fun, 2D platforming you’re used to from the series.
  • In addition to the full-length adventure, Ninteendo has thrown in mini games.
  • The new fighting technique that allows you to turn an enemy into a friend has perks.

Cons

  • Super Star Ultra doesn’t add that much to the series, or the original game.
  • Mini games don’t hold their own when it comes to entertainment value.

Description

  • Work through Kirby’s adventure, broken down into six chapters.
  • Jump, float, suck up enemies, and defy danger to advance: standard Kirby fare.
  • Try out mini games that use the DS stylus, which you unlock as you go.

Guide Review - Kirby Super Star Ultra Review

Kirby Super Star Ultra is fun, but it’s the fun in the way any solid, Super NES game would be when brought to the DS. The mini games, which use the stylus (unlike the main adventure), don’t add much to the overall experience. Playing as the lovable pink puff that floats and sucks up enemies always has its good points, though it’s hard to feel enthusiastic about a game that seems so familiar, so already-done. The one notable new mechanic – the ability to suck up an enemy, then spit him out as a converted friend who’ll help you fight – is a nice touch that adds some novelty to Kirby platforming. If you’re looking for a basically enjoyable game, haven’t played much Kirby in the past, or aren’t planning on thinking about it too hard, Super Star Ultra isn’t a bad bet.
