When Nintendo launched its new portable the DSi this month in Japan, many gamers felt the company hadn't gone far enough -- that instead of a new generation of portables, what they'd come up with was just a baby step from the original DS or the DS Lite. Still, there are a number of differences between the two earlier DS systems and Nintendo's newest release, which is due out in North America next year.
Software downloads
The DSi's biggest new feature is that it allows for the download of new content via the internet. It also has the ability to connect to an online shopping channel.Hardware
In addition to software updates, the DSi comes equipped with two small cameras, as well as the ability to record your voice via the microphone.Screen Size
Though only wider be a few centimeters, the DSi's screen seems notably larger than that of the DS or the DS Lite.
Brightness
The DSi's screen is, however, comparable in brightness to that of the DS Lite, while the original DS lags behind with a screen that's rather dark side-by-side with the two newer models.
Size and Weight
Though the DS Lite and the DSi are similar in size, the newer model is notably lighter.Buttons
Some of the DS's buttons have been re-conceived for the DSi. The volume bar, for example, is now represented by plus and minus buttons, as is the bar for screen brightness.
Colors
The original DS and the DS Lite come in a wide variety of colors, such as pink and blue. At the moment, the DSi is only available in black and white.
Exterior Finish
Unlike the DS Lite, which has a glossy finish, Nintendo has decided to return to matte with the DSi.
