Sonic the Hedgehog is capable of running like the wind—but once in a while, he just feels the compulsion to slip behind the wheel of a sweet car. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was a success when it hit multiple platforms (including the Nintendo DS) in 2010, and Sega is getting ready to put Sonic and his pals in the driver’s seat with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for multiple game systems, including the Nintendo 3DS.
The most compelling new feature in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is given away in its title: Your racer’s vehicle transforms to adapt to land, sea, and air races, a little bit like Mario Kart 7.
But the game’s transformation aspect doesn’t end there. According to Destructoid’s hands-on preview of the game, the tracks change from lap-to-lap, too. For instance, in one course dedicated to Sega’s beloved Panzer Dragoon series, a dragon destroys a rickety bridge after the racers take their first lap, which forces them to continue the race in the sea and the air.
Speaking of beloved franchises, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed isn’t short on nostalgia. Sega’s most familiar mascots are ready to drive, including Sonic, Tails, and Dr. Eggman, but lesser-known racers are on hand, too. Get ready to say hi to Beat from Jet Set Radio, BD Joe from Crazy Taxi, Amigo from Samba de Amigo, Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, and even Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe. That’s just a start. Expect more of the roster to be revealed over the coming weeks and months.
The All-Star moves from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing are returning as well. All-Star moves are signature actions that give characters a major advantage over the competition for a short time. Sonic, for instance, can turn into Super Sonic and blaze past other racers.
There’s no exact release date scheduled for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, but the game will be available at some point later this year. The Fall/Holiday season is a good guess, so buckle up until then. Vroom vroom!
