First Look at Nintendo 3DS Cartridges?

Follow me on:

The production of the Nintendo 3DS's game cards/cartridges is in the hands of a Taiwanese solid-state maker called Macronix. Some recent rumors have popped up about 3DS cartridges courtesy of a Taiwan-based game site called Gamrade: Supposedly, the cartridges are capable of holding up to 8 gigs of space, but Nintendo will be imposing a 2 gig data limit on developers--at least at first. Mind, this is all rumor, and Nintendo has yet to verify any of it.

Kotaku also has a picture of what the Nintendo 3DS cartridges might look like. They're big fellows, and lengthy, too! Check Kotaku's story for the pic, but remember, it's all rumor at this point.

Either way, this is all very interesting if you've followed gaming long enough to remember the drama that occurred when the industry switched from the cartridge medium to CDs because cartridges lacked the memory necessary for modern games (according to some developers). Now we have memory cards--and tiny game cards--that hold gigabytes of storage with no problem. Who would ever have thought that game cartridges would be able to store so much information in such a tiny space?
