According to an interview with Nintendo conducted by the German games site PlanetDS.de, the Nintendo 3DS's hardware design as we know it isn't final. That's not a surprise, as any piece of hardware is subject to a re-design before it hits store shelves. What's a little more surprising, and a titch disappointing, is news that the Nintendo 3DS won't feature a built-in Achievements system.
"Achievements" were added almost as an afterthought when the Xbox 360 came into being. Simply put, when you accomplish an in-game goal, you unlock a message notifying you of your success, which is then recorded for other players to check out when they access your profile online. Sony eventually added its own version of Achievements--called "Trophies"--to the Playstation 3. Nintendo, which has often been criticised for its lacklustre support towards online gameplay, has yet to implement a uniform achievement system for the Wii or the DS, though individual games occasionally offer leaderboards that record high scores.
Sadly, it doesn't look like the Nintendo 3DS will add Achievements, either. It's a minor thing, obviously, but Achievements are surprisingly fulfilling and addictive.
